San Diego Asian Americans for Equality Endorses John Hemmerling for Sheriff

San Diego Asian American for Equality (SDAAFE) strongly endorses John Hemmerling for San Diego County Sheriff. As Sheriff, Hemmerling will be tough on crime and a leader in criminal justice reform. He will restore confidence, competence and transparency in the department and institute needed reforms starting on day one.

“Due to the recent multiple Anti-Asian incidents, public safety and security have become the most pressing and imminent issues of concern for our Asian-American community,” stated Joan Chen, Ph.D, President of San Diego Asian Americans for Equality. “As Sheriff, John Hemmerling is committed to opening and maintaining a direct line of communication with the Asian American community as he strives to reduce violence and hate crimes in San Diego County. SDAAFE is proud to endorse Hemmerling for Sheriff.”

San Diegans deserve safety, honesty and transparency. Hemmerling will align the department’s priorities with the concerns of every community — providing direct communication and a direct channel to oversight boards and the public when visibility is paramount. When the people see that their sheriff is committed to transparency, trust and collaboration are sure to follow.

San Diego Asian Americans for Equality is a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Asian Americans to win equal opportunity and justice through active participation in civic and public affairs in San Diego County. It is the only nonpartisan Asian American Political Action Committee in San Diego County with over 1700 subscribers.

“I am honored to have the support of San Diego Asian Americans for Equality in my race for San Diego County Sheriff,” said John Hemmerling. “SDAAFE has worked diligently to advocate for Asian Americans across the state, and I am eager to advance our shared values to safeguard our neighborhoods, including households, schools and businesses, as your Sheriff.”

Hemmerling served nine years as a San Diego Police Officer, patrolling the high crime Mid-City area, where he was cited for his response to an armed robbery of a business, preventing loss of life and property. Hemmerling is also a retired Marine Corps Reserve Colonel and is a decorated combat veteran of the Gulf and Iraq Wars.

For the past six years, Hemmerling has headed the Criminal and Community Justice Divisions in the San Diego City Attorney’s Office, prosecuting more than 18,000 misdemeanor criminal cases a year. He is also endorsed by the Deputy City Attorney’s Association, former San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, and the Republican Party of San Diego County.
