Steve has been living in San Diego since 1986, obtained his BS degree from University of California at Riverside, and MS degree from University of Texas at Dallas, and has a career in software development. Since 2000, Steve has been serving on the boards of various community organizations, with expertise in event planning and hosting, public relations, fund raising, organizational development, and inter-organization collaborations.

Biographical Info

Term: 2017-2018, 2019-2020

Alex Hu has been living in San Diego since 1998.  In last twenty-five years Alex has been serving various financial institutions, both in China and U.S, from Bank of China to Bank of America, and other regional commercial banks.  Alex graduated from Nanjing University, Nanjing, China, in English Languages & English Literature major, in 1992.  He obtained his MBA from University of Phoenix in San Diego in 2001, and certificate on master level program for senior officers in banking, from Pacific Coast Banking School, Seattle, WA, in 2008.  Besides his professional banking career mainly in commercial banking and business lending to support local businesses, Alex devoted himself into various social and community services, including a five-year term with Citizen’s Oversight Committee, San Diego Community College District, from 2007 through 2012, supervising $1.55 billion construction funding to renovate 3 community college campuses and one continuing education center, under SD Prop. S & Prop. N.   Alex is an active Rotarian, Paul Harris Fellow, with over six year’s board service including two-term presidency with Rotary Club of Kearny Mesa, since 2012.  As a board member also treasurer, Alex is responsible for book keeping, banking, general financial oversight, and financial reporting of SDAAFE.

Biographical Info

Terms: 2015-2016, 2017-2018, 2019-2020

Nelson Zhang is a social activist and one of the co-founders of SDAAFE. He commits his time and effort to the community since late 2013. He has organized several rallies with more than 500 people to join. He volunteers in La Jolla Presidents’ Lions Club and other organizations.

Biographical Info

Frank Xu is a social activist and one of the co-founders of SDAAFE. He commits his time and effort to the community since late 2013. After organizing several rallies against the discrimination towards Chinese community, he realizes that the only way to empower the community is to serve and get involved. He was a board member of Educational Technology Advisory Committee and Budget Review Advisory Committee in Poway Unified School District. He also serves as a board member in La Jolla Presidents’ Lions Club and his own home owner association.

Photo of Dr. Joan Chen

Biographical Info

Term: 2018-2019

Dr. Joan Chen received her Ph.D in Biology from University of Los Angeles (UCLA). Passionate about science, Dr. Joan Chen has devoted lots of her time to promote science education in the San Diego region. She was the head coach of the Carmel Valley Middle School Science Olympiad team for two years, and now serves in the San Diego Regional Science Olympiad steering committee. In addition to the science field, Joan has also been actively involved in community service, working with organizations such as the San Diego Coastkeeper to do beach-cleanups, participating in the San Diego Asian Youth Organization (SDAYO) and Pan Pacific Law Enforcement Association’s 8th annual Rice Drive, and participating in Torrey Hills Elementary school’s 7/11 planning. Joan strongly advocates and wishes to promote more involvement of Chinese Americans in public affairs during her term in SDAAFE.

Biographical Info

Stacy Chen has been living in San Diego county since 1997. Trained as a nuclear engineer from Shanghai Jiao Tong university, she has veered into finance and accounting field since moving to the US. She is currently working as a financial analyst for a subdivision of a Fortune 500 company, overseeing $100 Million in budget. Stacy has been an active member of the community, organizing and participating numerous activities at local schools. She joins SDAAFE in 2017 to take a more proactive role in politics and make a greater contribution to the Asian American community.

Biographical Info

Term: 2018 -2019

Aijie Han has been involved in community and social activities since moved in San Diego. She joined in a UCSD campus charitable group, Still Thoughts Association (STA), and volunteered many activities to reach out the community, such as beach cleanup, visits to Senior House and Healthcare Center at downtown San Diego. She served as session Chair and symposium organizer at American Chemical Society (ACS) and Materials Research Society (MRS) national meetings, and served as a panelist for several National Science Foundation (NSF) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) programs. She has been involved in the activities of SDAAFE since 2014. She has the passion to work on promoting active involvement in public affairs and social issues in our community.

Shawn He has been living in San Diego since 2004. As a veteran high tech professional with over 19 years of experience, Shawn obtained his Master degrees from Harvard and Purdue, and Bachelor degree from University of Science and Technology of China. Outside of his work, Shawn is an active member and volunteer in community services and activities, including SDAAFE active member since 2014, ACCEF member since 2004, EPICS national program active member from 1997 to 1999, West Highlands Pacific HOA board member in 2012, Carmel Creek Elementary School site council member in 2008. Shawn opposed SCA5 and was active in grassroots efforts in his community. His goal as a board member of SDAAFE is to organize Asian especially Chinese community politically to help protecting Asian American’s equal rights and interests such that as a minority its voice can still be heard and its concern won’t be easily ignored.

Photo of Dr. Manqing Li

Biographical Info

Term: 2015-2017 (supplement), 2018-2019

Manqing Li obtained his B.Sc. degree from Tsinghua University and Ph.D. from Purdue University. Currently he is a research scientist at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Li’s research interests focus on immunology, virology and cancer therapies. His research has been published on top tier academic journals. Dr. Li is a big believer of equality. He believes everyone is born equal, and no one is more “equal” than others. Any Affirmative Action, if necessary to take, should be based on socioeconomic status only. Real diversity will and can only be achieved by holding true equality. Besides his participation in SDAAFE, Dr. Li also devotes his time to coaching math club at schools, organizing sports club for kids, and various other community activities.

Biographical Info

Term: 2019 -2020

Ms. Li has been a resident of the San Diego County since the year 2000.

Before, she worked as a legal consultant at a law firm and lead the sections of Asian businesses and market development in Ohio. She was one of the pioneers and leaders of a nationwide campaign from 1998 to 2000. This campaign helped thousands of China and India born professionals receive their permanent residency status in the US.

After Ms. Li moved to San Diego, she was consistently active in local community services. Ms. Li was the Chairwoman of the Community of Chinese New Year fair, located in downtown San Diego in 2001. Currently, she is also serving as a board member of the National Council of Chinese Americans.

Ms. Li received her BA in China and attended an MBA program at CSU.

Martin Lu received his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree of Law from Shangxi and Fudan University, China, and graduated from Paralegal program at Augusta State University, GA. He was involved in extensive amounts of works in law firms prior to working in industrial. Martin has lived in San Diego for almost ten years, and he has the enthusiasm and passion to work with the people who like to improve the local Asian community which will meet with a long-term objectives of the society.

Biographical Info

Term: 2019 -2020

Zhiming Wang, Esq., is the managing attorney of San Diego Injury Law Center and the founder of San Diego Personal Injury Law Group. Mr. Wang focuses exclusively on personal injury cases and is devoted to helping plaintiffs who have been injured in accidents involving automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, bicyclists and pedestrians.   He is an aggressive advocate, civil litigator and a determined negotiator, having recovered millions of dollars for his injured clients. He is one of the very few Chinese American lawyers who try cases in California State courts and Federal Courts.

Mr. Wang earned his Bachelor of Law Degree with high honors from the prestigious Zhejiang University School of Law in 2008. Mr. Wang earned his Masters of Law Degree with summa cum laude from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2009.

Mr. Wang is a member of the State Bar of California and the State Bar of New York and is proud to have affiliations with organizations that promote civil justice such as the Consumers Attorneys of San Diego, the Consumers Attorneys of Los Angeles, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Mr. Wang is also a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum.

Mr. Wang has successfully resolved hundreds of personal injury claims on behalf of his injured claimants.  Among these victories are a $3 million injury settlement and multiple settlements in the amount of $1 million or more.

Henry has been living in San Diego since 2001.  Henry has been serving various financial institutions in China, Europe and US. He has worked as manager at Bank of China, London and VP at MUFG mainly in Fin Tech area. Henry was educated at University of London, Chinese Academy of Science and Nanjing University.

Henry is vice president of both San Diego Go Club and California Go Association. He’s keeping promote Go culture in local community and involved organizing American Go Congress 2017, 2018 California State Go Championship, youth activities and other events.

Yong is a veteran Electrical Engineer who was educated at Caltech in Pasadena, California and Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China.  He has worked in several industries (wireless, biotech, semiconductor, setop boxes) and contributed in improving people’s lives.  Having been living in San Diego for more than 20 years Yong cares deeply for local communities and has become increasingly active in community affairs.  His main goal as a board member of SDAAFE is to build bridges and open up opportunities to encourage young Asian American students to become more engaged in civic activities.
